MycoFarming uses fungi to save the planet. They aim to harness the power of mycelium (the “root network” of fungi) to filter pollutants like nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. Their challenge? Ensuring that their biofilters operate efficiently and are safe for large-scale application.

MycoFarming’s biofilters can remove 60 to 90% of pollutants, transforming them into fertile biomass that benefits the agricultural sector. This circular system not only cleans the water but also generates valuable resources.

During DGTL ADE, MycoFarming tested their filtration system by purifying toilet water using fungi. This experiment provided many insights into the effectiveness of their technology. Co-founder Rutger shared his excitement: “We’re offering something most people have never seen before, so it was amazing to interact with the crowd and see their reactions. After so many positive responses, we’re exploring if we can use event waste streams, like paper and water, to grow our mushrooms.”
