Zwarte Cross 2025

At Zwarte Cross, three research teams are testing their innovations in collaboration with Innofest. Two of these teams are developing solutions for a more sustainable and inclusive society, supported by funding from Regieorgaan SIA. The third team is working on an innovation that encourages people to be more physically active — made possible by SIA and Sportinnovator.

With their knowledge and ideas, these teams are building a future that is greener, fairer, and more active. And as a festivalgoer, you can contribute to this movement by experiencing their prototypes and sharing valuable feedback.

Brood op zijn retour: From Returned Bread to Valuable Ingredient
Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein & Regieorgaan SIA

Every year, around 150,000 tons of bread in the Netherlands go unsold or unused. Through the project Brood op zijn retour, researchers from Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein have developed a method to give this “returned bread” a second life. The bread is transformed into an innovative ingredient that replaces sugar in various food products, including muffins, ice cream, and breakfast cake. At the festival, the Van Hall Larenstein team is testing the taste and acceptance of these products, while also raising public awareness. The overarching goal: reusing bread within the food chain.

Gronings Feestmaal x Visto: Working Together Towards a Healthier Food Environment
Hanzehogeschool & Regieorgaan SIA

CMD students present Visto, a new app that visually captures food stories at festivals. In collaboration with researchers from Hanzehogeschool, they’re working on the innovation Gronings Feestmaal, using a small food truck to collect food-related stories from festivalgoers. The combination of the food truck and the app maps out images, eating habits, and specific preferences. With this valuable input, the team is building a healthier and more conscious food environment tailored to the needs of festival visitors.

Wearable Breathing Trainer: Take Control of Your Breathing
Hogeschool Saxion (Enschede) & Breathpal (B.J. Bulsink Beheer B.V.) & Sportinnovator & Regieorgaan SIA

An innovative breathing trainer, built into a smart shirt, helps children improve their breathing after physical exertion. This can lead to better breathing techniques and more enjoyment in sports — encouraging kids to be more physically active.

About Innofest

Innofest stands for a sustainable, socially just, inclusive, and regenerative society—one in which everyone has a place. That is the compass that guides our work, even within a system where we, too, encounter situations that create friction.

We believe that now, more than ever, fast and effective solutions are needed for a greener, more sustainable world and for greater social equality. Our mission is to make those solutions visible and applicable by testing them in the heart of society, in front of a broad and diverse audience—at festivals and other Living Labs.

As in previous years, we are once again present at Zwarte Cross. The recent acquisition of Zwarte Cross by investment firm KKR raises ethical concerns for us as well. Their unethical investments in other businesses are fundamentally at odds with our core values, and we explicitly distance ourselves from them.

At the same time, this situation underscores the urgency of our mission. Precisely in cultural spaces where tension and friction are present, we can make a difference—by demonstrating solutions and facilitating dialogue, helping to spark the movement toward new systems.

Press & Media

Journalists and media partners are warmly invited to experience our work up close at Zwarte Cross. At this festival, Innofest showcases innovative solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and fair society.
