What if local waste streams aren’t the end of a product, but the starting point for something new?

As part of the Plastic Bewust project, NHL Stenden’s Van Poep tot Podiumlicht explores how local waste streams, such as plastic waste, animal manure and plant-based waste, can be given a second life. These materials are turned into a biocomposite that can be used to create new, circular products. At TT Festival, the focus was on 3D-printed lampshades.

More than 100 visitors tested the lampshades and shared their thoughts through interviews, statements and tear-off cards. In total, 133 tear-off cards were completed. The lampshades were also tested in practice for ease of installation, durability and outdoor use.

The response was largely positive. Visitors were enthusiastic about circular lighting and felt that festivals and municipalities should make greater use of sustainable, circular solutions. But having a lampshade made from these materials at home was a different story for some. The association with animal manure played a role in this. Interestingly, almost nobody noticed any smell. This shows that when it comes to circular products, it’s not just the material that matters. The story behind it matters too.

The practical test also provided some valuable insights. The lampshades are sturdy once they are in place, but the current mounting system could be improved. The loose lampshades are also still vulnerable during transport. For temporary applications, such as festivals, a simpler mounting system and a more robust design are needed.

The next step is to further improve the design and explore what other circular products and applications could be developed. The team will also look at how these products could be used beyond festivals and public spaces.
