Year2025

The Roffa Roll combines circular production, artistic design, and social impact in a single product. Urban residual materials are transformed into toilet paper, packaged in rice paper wrappers printed with calligraphy. Production takes place in a small-scale, climate-neutral micro-factory run entirely by women. This innovation contributes to waste reduction, employment, and inclusivity.

During the World Port Days, The Roffa Roll tested how visitors responded to the product, the name, and the design of the wrappers. Three painted toilet bowls featuring questions such as “Are you a folder or a scruncher?” were also used, attracting a lot of attention and sparking lighthearted conversations. Visitors recognized and appreciated the product’s local, queer, circular, and artistic character and expressed pride in the idea of using it.

The test showed that in many households, women are still the ones who do the grocery shopping and therefore decide which toilet paper is purchased. Willingness to pay was around €3–4 for a 6-pack of sustainable toilet paper. Circularity and local production were seen as the main selling points, more important than price.

Further validation of production costs is needed to determine the final retail price. Partnerships should be established with supermarkets, cultural institutions, and the Municipality of Rotterdam to enable distribution and use in public restrooms. The brand should be further developed through humor and storytelling to strengthen rituals, engagement, and brand experience. New tests and pilot projects should be organized at other events to further explore user responses, aesthetics, and communication.
