Swimming in open water is becoming increasingly popular, especially now that we are experiencing a rise in temperature due to climate change. However, the quality of the water is not checked often enough, especially during events such as triathlons, swimming tours and festivals. TRIAWATCH measures the water quality and provides advice on the safety of swimming locations by means of drones in the air and under water.

During the Zwarte Cross, underwater drones were used to collect water samples. In addition, flying drones recorded the water color to detect the presence of, for example, blue-green algae. The drones proved to be efficient in collecting water samples, with the depth of the measurements being precisely adjustable. In addition, swimmers and recreational users could easily be avoided, so that the drones did not cause any nuisance.

What stood out in the interviews with swimmers was that many assumed that the water quality was good, because they assumed that the beach would otherwise not be accessible. When they saw that the water quality was actively monitored, they felt noticeably safer. This reassurance shows that visible monitoring of water quality can be important for the peace of mind of participants and visitors.

The next step for Triawatch is a test during the Triathlon in Almere, where the drones will be shown in action to the public to generate more response and awareness around the protection of water quality during swimming events.
