Did you know that the furniture industry is a serious threat to our planet worldwide? In the Netherlands alone, 247 million pounds of furniture waste are disposed of and burned every year. Only 10% of this huge mountain of furniture is recycled. Kairos has decided that things must be different. Their radically sustainable sofa is modular, so it can last a lifetime. During Le Guess Who? they explored with visitors how best to communicate their mission.

The reactions were mostly positive, says owner Thijs van Bemmel: “The recorded audio clip about the bank was well received, although there were also many English-speaking visitors who unfortunately could not follow the story. Nevertheless, we received a lot of useful feedback. The visitors of the festival didn’t know anything about our bank yet. Some expected a more enthusiastic story, while the fragment was recorded in a soft and calm voice. The quiet voice did strike a chord with the people who were most enthusiastic about the concept. It was funny to notice that not everyone knew that the test revolved around the bank and that the bank started talking to them through the audio fragment from the I form. We are going to analyze all the collected data in the coming period. Of particular interest to us is whether people who are considering purchasing a bank also feel involved in sustainability. Based on this analysis, we will adjust the audio clips we use at different locations. With this, we hope to scale up quickly.”
