Many outdoor enthusiasts encounter the same problem: there are few places where you can easily change clothes. That’s why Flaaks developed the DuPoncho, a sustainable linen changing poncho that offers both privacy and comfort, serving as an eco-friendly alternative to building changing facilities. Thanks to the use of locally grown flax, it provides an environmentally friendly substitute for synthetic materials.

During Into The Great Wide Open, NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with Flaaks, the innovator behind the DuPoncho, explored how visitors experienced the product, whether they recognized it as a solution to the changing problem, and what value they attributed to it.

A total of 82 visitors shared feedback through tear-off cards, card sorting, and interviews. The DuPoncho was perceived not only as a practical changing solution, but also as a multifunctional garment. Many participants saw potential uses as beachwear or camping attire. There was demand for more sizes, including options for children. Athletes partly recognized the changing problem (3.27/5), but appreciated the DuPoncho as a solution (3.86/5) and could imagine using it themselves (3.88/5). However, willingness to pay was below the production cost.

The next step is to broaden the positioning of the DuPoncho toward the lifestyle and outdoor markets, reduce production costs through scaling and alternative materials, and conduct follow-up research among specific sports target groups. Further improvements will also focus on weight, sizing, and washability.

The research was conducted by NHL Stenden Hogeschool, Flaaks (praktijkpartner), and with financing from Regieorgaan SIA, Sportinnovator, and Innofest.
