Anyone who has ever tried to have a conversation at a busy festival knows the challenge: sound is everywhere, yet the voice right in front of you seems to disappear. BeephoniX is developing a nature-inspired hearing system that helps people understand conversations more clearly in noisy environments. The technology takes inspiration from the dynamic ears of bees and uses directional microphone technology to filter out surrounding noise more effectively.

At Bevrijdingsfestival Utrecht, BeephoniX tested whether visitors could actually understand each other better when using the directional listening mode of the headset. In an A/B test, one group used the technology in directional mode, while a control group used a different setting without knowing the difference.

The test resulted in 44 usable responses and showed a clear effect. Most participants using the BeephoniX technology reported improved speech intelligibility. The festival turned out to be the perfect testing ground: busy, noisy, and realistic. Not a quiet room, but the kind of environment where the problem truly exists.

At the same time, the test highlighted a few technical points for improvement. During this trial, the microphone was not yet worn on the body, which caused a slight delay in sound processing. In future tests, BeephoniX plans to refine the hardware setup by positioning the microphone closer to the user and further optimising the software.

Over the coming months, BeephoniX will focus on expanding its dataset, reducing latency, and connecting with investors to help accelerate the next stage of development.
