For many queer individuals, participating in sports is far from a given. The lack of inclusive sports facilities and role models often makes them feel unsafe or unwelcome. Queertopia aims to change this by organizing accessible, safe, and inclusive sports classes that celebrate diversity and foster community. Their mission: to create a space where physical activity contributes to confidence, wellbeing, and connection.
During Pink Saturday at the Kwaku Festival, Queertopia set up a pop-up gym, complete with boxing sessions and a wheel of fortune. Visitors appreciated the approachable and open atmosphere. At the same time, it became clear that many participants do not live in Amsterdam and prefer to exercise closer to home. Interviews and an ideas board provided concrete insights: there is demand for a wider range of sports, more social activities alongside training, and visible diversity among trainers and staff.
With this feedback, Queertopia is exploring ways to expand their offerings, reach more BIPOC queer participants, and potentially open locations outside Amsterdam. Step by step, they are building a sports community where everyone feels seen, safe, and included.
