During the Hockey World Cup, Boost your Game tested whether video feedback could motivate athletes to keep practising. More than 100 people took part, 88 of whom provided feedback. Participants watched footage of a hockey exercise, such as a dribbling exercise for beginners or a drag flick for more experienced players, and then shared their experiences through a tear-off card and interviews.
The first results are positive. The video footage seems to help athletes stay motivated to practise, which was also confirmed in interviews with trainers and coaches. Players in the lowest competition level in particular found the footage helpful and were more motivated to keep practising. Beginners and younger players also showed strong motivation to improve their hockey skills.
Motivation to improve did not in itself determine how helpful participants found the footage. However, participants who found the video feedback helpful were more motivated to keep practising. This was true for both experienced and less experienced hockey players.
The test also generated interest beyond the participants. Several organisations and professionals in the hockey world were interested in the video tools, leading to valuable new contacts for further testing. The collaboration between the company and higher education, with students involved in the project, also proved valuable for everyone involved.
The next step is to get a clearer picture of which target group can benefit most from the video feedback, with a particular focus on beginners. The team will also explore which exercises work best for this group and how simple they need to be.
At the same time, the business case will be explored further. Sports clubs have limited budgets and often prioritise higher-level teams over beginner teams. It is therefore important to understand what added value Boost your Game offers compared with free alternatives, such as the Video Delay app, and what clubs are actually willing to pay for.
The interest is there. Now it’s time to find out who benefits most from the video feedback and how to turn that value into the right offering.
