Stadsapp is developing a platform that helps residents get involved in their local area in a simple and accessible way. Through the app, users can take part in polls, discover neighbourhood activities, ask for or offer help, and report local issues. The goal is straightforward: make it easier for people to connect with each other and with the place they call home.

At Bevrijdingsfestival Utrecht, Stadsapp explored which features would motivate people to actually download and use the app. The results showed that visitors were most enthusiastic about features that offer direct value in everyday life. The most popular options were an SOS button for emergencies, neighbour-to-neighbour support, and a clear overview of local activities and events.

The SOS feature got particularly strong reactions. Some visitors saw it as a valuable tool for safety and community connection, while others raised concerns about spam or misuse. That feedback led to an important design decision: the feature will be optional, with clear boundaries and safeguards in place to prevent abuse.

Another valuable insight came from the way the app was presented. The word “municipality” felt distant or uninspiring to many visitors. At the same time, people were genuinely interested in sharing their opinions, contributing ideas, and participating in polls. For Stadsapp, this suggests that communication should focus less on formal civic participation and more on having a say, getting involved, and making a difference in your own neighbourhood.

The first version of Stadsapp will launch in Houten. From there, the team plans to continue developing the platform, including new activity features, a safe and reliable SOS function, and expansion into other municipalities and cities.
